ecokit development

update june 2016

We’ve nearly crossed the six-month mark since the start of 2016 and we are pleased to let you know we are on schedule with the development and our target to start selling ecokit homes later this year.

We wanted to let you all know that we would like to say thanks to everyone who filled our survey, left a comment on our blog or Facebook page or send feedback via email. Your insight has been invaluable, we’re really encouraged by the passion and enthusiasm you show for ecokit. We love the sample floor plans you have created and we’re making changes and improvements every day as a direct result of your feedback and sharing. Keep the feedback coming, let’s shape the ecokit together!

What was happening in June
In June we have started working on design of a bathroom and kitchen ‘pod’. Those ‘pods’ will be a pre-installed plumbing and drainage systems ready to be hooked to main water supply / sewage system or to your water storage tanks and sewage system.

We are currently looking for a company to manufacture those pods for us so if you are or know a plumber with entrepreneurial mindset, please get in touch!

Our ‘to do list’ for July

For July we have many plans, including the following:

  • Testing the selection tool to estimate the cost – we have completed the pricing for the major components and now are in touch with some of you to let you test the tool. We plan to invite you all of course but we will be releasing the access to it in batches, so keep checking your inbox for the invitation from mid July!
  • Ordering of the first materials & components for the insulated blocks assembly
  • Getting ready to build the prototype of the first few insulated blocks to further refine the assembly and interconnections

A little bit more about the structural blocks

The ecokit house has been designed to be erected quickly, by an inexperienced builder... Click To Tweet

The ecokit house has been designed to be erected quickly, by an inexperienced builder and possibly without the need for crane. We have finalized the development of those blocks and would like to share a little bit more about the kit size and customization…

The skeleton of ecokit is created from a structural insulated blocks. Those blocks are 600mm wide, and light enough to be safely handled without a crane.

Those blocks form 4 different sections of the house and can be mix’n’match to create a custom size kit to suit pretty much anyone.

Section 1: the covered porch

These sections are designed for the outdoor area and can be added to the west or to the east of the house. We recommend using at least 3 sections (1800mm) to create enough shading for the house glazing, especially if facing west. One side of those sections is open for the glazing (recommended for north facing side but can be mirrored to south if needed).

Blocks included in this section do not contain any insulation.

Any number of those sections can be added to create even larger outdoor space.

Section 2: the living space

These sections are designed for the kitchen / living space area. One side of those sections is open for the glazing (recommended for north facing side but can be mirrored to south if needed)

We recommend using at least 8 sections (4800mm) to provide enough space for the ‘kitchen pod’.

Any number of those sections can be added but the extensive glazing should be considered for every specific location and position of the house to prevent overheating of the house.Section 3: the private space

These sections are designed for the bathroom / sleeping areas. Those sections are fully closed on both sides and do not contain any windows, however a skylight can be added.

We recommend using at least 6 sections (3600mm) to provide enough space for the staircase (in case of the version with loft) and the ‘bathroom pod’.

Any number of additional sections can be added.

Section 4: the eaves

This section is also designed for the outdoor area and can be added to the west or to the east of the house. We recommend using at least 1 section (600mm) on the opposite side of the house to the covered porch, to create eaves for a weather protection. Those sections are fully closed on both sides.

Blocks included in this section do not contain any insulation.

Any number of those sections can be added to create even larger outdoor space.

Let’s start planning your ecokit

Before you start playing with the price estimation tool, we would like you to take some time and make a plan.

We have designed ecokit house as a compact accommodation for a single person or a couple. Sure, a family with kids can live in a compact house (people did it for centuries with many more children than today) but you should make sure everyone living in the house will enjoy a comfortable and happy living environment. Smaller houses are not about sacrifice but to successfully live in a small house with your family, your house HAS to fit you ALL.

When thinking about your design, it is best not to have to start with a blank slate, so we have identified the minimum number of sections to fit in a usable kitchen, standard size bedroom and comfortable to use bathroom. And we give you the option to order any number of additional sections to extend the house to suit your lifestyle.

To figure out how much space you will need, make a list of at least ten things that you require for your home, ten things you can’t live without.

Ecokit is designed to be flexible and can be easily extended in years to come, so don’t plan for your retirement but live in the present – what is important now and in the next 5 years or so? Things can always change and adjust over time but your house should function properly now.

Here is a sample list of things that may be on that list:

  • I love cooking and must have a full kitchen with extra working space
  • I plan to live off the grid and must have enough space to store my garden produce and preserved food
  • I have problems with my knees so can’t use stairs to get into bedroom
  • I must have a king sized bed
  • I must have a bath tub
  • I must have a place for all my books
  • I must have lots of natural light/windows for my hobbies / work
  • I must have a spare bed for guests
  • I must have extra room for my grand kids
  • I must have a place to quilt and store all of my quilting supplies
  • I must have a sleeping space for each of my pets
  • I must incorporate my existing furniture that was handed down
  • etc.

Your list will be completely unique but spend some time thinking about the most valuable parts of your day and the things that make you smile and make your home, home. Once you have your list of important items write it down, think of how you can incorporate those. Some might not be apparent, some might take special/extra considerations.

Do you have any thoughts you’d like to add? This is a collaborative project, please, if you have something to add/correct, leave a comment!

We look forward to updating you on our exciting progress.
